4 Grams of Sugar Make Me Tired?

by Marie

Visitor Question:

In the morning after I have my first cup of coffee with my favorite coffee creamer.
Creme Brulee liquid. I seem to feel tired. It has 4 graims of sugar.
Do you think this is the cause?

Lifetime Fat Loss Answers:

Yes, I do think it could be the cause. I wouldn't think that one cup of coffee would make you feel tired but the sugar may be raising your blood sugar too high. That will result in a drop in energy. Try drinking your coffee with low fat milk and see how you feel. When you ingest a food that is high glycemic, in this case the sugar, usually after 20 minutes, the pancreas will release the hormone insulin to reduce the glycemic rate. Insulin converts the glucose (the sugar) to glycogen (energy.) It's trying to regulate the blood sugar so you may then experience a drop in blood sugar and you will have that "let down" feeling. At first the drink boosts you up and then lets you down in a tired feeling.

You can try drinking your coffee with low fat milk and a low glycemic sweetener like agave syrup or fructose made from fruits (available in natural foods markets.) You could also eat some protein like eggs with your coffee drink which would reduce the glycemic effect of the sugar. It's also possible you are very sensitive to the caffeine in coffee so if you are still tired, try de-caf.

Marie, if you need to lose fat it would be better to switch to low glycemic sweeteners. You can read more about the "good sugars" by going to the Site Map above and clicking on Sugar Free Desserts and the Good Sugars. You will not feel tired after eating foods sweetened with the low glycemic sweeteners!
