Do Calories Count?

Yes and no. Too many of the wrong calories count A LOT! But the right calories? Not really. Why are Asians in general more slender than Americans, even though according to scientists,* calorie consumption is greater in China than America? They eat a fraction of the meat we do and they are physically active.

When it comes to calories, what matters most is the big picture. Don’t spend too much time down in the trees or you’ll just get bored or compulsive about eating.

It’s not much fun to worry all the time about how many calories you’re eating. The truth is if you consume a high (animal) fat, high protein, high glycemic diet you will store more calories than you need as FAT on your "behind", your midsection and around your face and upper thighs.

Here's the big picture with a glance at the trees. You can pretty much eat what you want if more than half of what you eat is fresh fruits and vegetables. What I’m calling the trees are some loose guidelines to steer your food choices. Each day you need approximately:

50 grams of protein (plant or animal or cultured dairy) 100 - 120 grams of low glycemic carbs 30 grams of mostly plant fats

Half of what you eat should be fruits and vegetables and some whole grains, one quarter some protein, a little less the plant fats. You can get a lot of your fats in your protein source. Don’t over think it. What do you feel like eating? When you get enough plant food and no junk food your body will tell you what you need. Plan your meals around vegetables or fruits as the main attraction.

When you add lots of physical activity like walking for 40 - 60 minutes, 5 days a week, your metabolism will be transformed. You’ll be one of those skinny people who “never seems to gain a pound.”

When you spend your time in the bottom of the Mediterranean Diet Food Pyramid your calories “burn” at a faster rate and are transformed into energy. This can cause a significant shift in calorie metabolism and in your weight!
