Fresh Peach Smoothie Recipe

There's nothing like a fresh, very sweet peach to remind me of why I look forward to summer! (I know, I know it's now September but it's still hot in California.) The very best fruit smoothie recipe for me is the peach smoothie. Peaches are not starchy, they hardly have any calories (40 in a medium sized peach,) they're low glycemic and do NOT raise your blood sugar. This smoothie can make a fabulous breakfast, lunch or snack when you add a slice of whole grain toast.

Yes, by the time peaches come in summer's almost over but it's almost like the best is saved for last. Peaches are delicate and it's not easy to grow them much less get them to market ripe and sweet. If you are lucky enough to live in a part of the region where they're grown, this is the time to get down to your farmer's market or even a roadside stand and buy a bunch.

Buy them organic. With the peach it really matters because when they're grown conventionally they are one of the "dirty dozen" of fruits and vegetables that are really full of pesticides. You can always wash and peel them but if you can, buy them from someone who grows without toxins. They are usually sweeter and better anyway, at least in my experience.

Our peach tree (in the picture) seems to have leaf curl almost every year. The peaches still taste good and some years they look better than others (like this year.) I'm grateful to have them and will be eating peach smoothies every day until they start getting soft and mushy. In fact, it's one of those recipes that works as a dinner replacement and can either really help you shed fat or just keep your weight maintenance on the "straight and narrow."
