Visitor Question:

Greetings! I am eating whole grain cereals and oatmeal for breakfast, but can you recommend what breakfast cereals would be best for maintaining lower blood sugar?

thanks so much!

Lifetime Fat Loss Answers:

Hi Dan,

I think you're asking about cold breakfast cereals? As you probably know oatmeal is low glycemic and the fiber in it, beta glucan, which helps to control your blood sugar, also lowers cholesterol! So it's a great choice. The other whole grain, hot cereals may be moderately glycemic (some are low) but are still much better than most cold cereals. So many of the commercial cold cereals have little to no nutrient value and most will raise your blood sugar.

So, as far as cold cereals that do NOT raise your blood sugar, Ancient Quinoa Harvest makes one called Quinoa Flakes which tastes great. Quinoa has the most protein of any grain which is why it's low glycemic. Kellogg's All Bran, Bran Buds and Special K are all low glycemic. Fiberwise is low glycemic. Also Ezekiel now makes some sprouted grain, cold cereals that are low glycemic. If you can't find these at your grocery store try any natural foods market. There's a complete list of others on my low glycemic food list.

Here's another tip for managing your blood sugar and one that works well in the morning. Try putting 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon in water or tea and drink it with your breakfast or sprinkle it on your cereal. You really should do this before 2 meals a day so if you can drink the cinnamon twice a day even better. Lots of research has been done on this. You can read more about how to lower your blood sugar with cinnamon in my July newsletter or on my Cinnamon and Weight Loss page.
