May 8, Stopping Type 2 Diabetes

What does being fat really mean?

Do you still have extreme food cravings and you think you're eating right?

Diabetes sounds so scary - is it a permanent condition?

Yikes! Every day I read another news item about obesity or type 2 diabetes. It seems like we are a nation of fat people now even though we pretty much know how to eat or think we do. Is it possible we're being sabotaged in our efforts? I mean dessert once in a while shouldn't mean a lifetime of belly fat.

The answers to these questions can set you FREE...free from your extra menopause fat, free from obsessing about calories, free from fears about serious diseases. Now's the time to figure out this type 2 diabetes thing.

Belly fat is an indication of insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes and it is not impossible to get rid of no matter what you hear. Just challenging and you have to know where to look for those "hidden sugars." It's interesting enough just to learn about the glycemic index without having to worry about what's in the preservatives in every day foods.

If you're eating well and your body is screaming for more...likely your blood sugar is getting spiked by a food you didn't know was high glycemic or even a preservative you didn't know was a sugar!

When we're fat we've basically got a sugar problem that can become type 2 diabetes if it goes on too long. It's time to stop that process in it's tracks. Read on...

May 2, Type 2 Diabetes in Young Children

Not to be all doom and gloom but the news does seem to be getting worse about the epidemic of type 2 diabetes in young children. A new study was reported in the New York Times recently that this disease progresses more rapidly in kids and is much harder to treat than when it occurs in adults.

Apparently, this is the first large study done on type 2 diabetes in children and it is a doozy. One of the authors of the study and the director of the diabetes center at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. David Nathan, is now talking everywhere about the severity of the disease when it shows up in children.

It makes sense that a metabolic disorder taking hold of young children <i>would</i> be extremely difficult to turn around. After all, it is a time when the body is growing and learning how to regulate. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder that indicates that insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar, has been completely disrupted in it's normal processes.

One of the best things parents could do for their kids to prevent this from happening or even<i> to reverse it </i>is to make them aware of the toxic affects of high fructose corn syrup and how to read labels so they can avoid it! Dr. Lustig, who I quote in the article linked below, an endocrinologist at UC San Francisco, says the reason for the staggering rates of childhood obesity and the diseases that go with it is <b>high fructose corn syrup. </b> Avoid it like the plague.

Is your child too fat? Read the link below to really understand what's going on and then read "How To Prevent Childhood Obesity" to get a handle on what to do about it.

Apr 24, Is Your Child Getting Too Fat?

Childhood obesity seems to be rampant these days. I am seeing more and more articles in the media telling parents what to do about it. The statistics ARE alarming. Most people I talk to about their weight problems tell me they are worried about their children who are falling into the same patterns.

As often happens when people sense that something is spiraling a little out of control, the first impulse is to just try to shut it down. So...what I am reading is how parents are putting their kids on very restricted diets (diets do not work) and then monitoring their every mouthful. It's understandable but sadly it is going to make the problem much, much worse. I would guess that in the previous generation most of the cases of childhood obesity were due to parents who over controlled their kids' eating. Now that we have an epidemic of obesity from other causes (a proliferation of white processed foods and the addition of<a href="http://www.lifetimefatloss.com/childhood-obesity-facts.html"> high fructose corn syrup</a> to everything under the sun) over controlling looks like it may become the response. Yikes.

No one on this earth can experience another person's body. Your kids have to learn to tune into their own bodies and trust their own experiences. We can teach but we should not take away our kids intuitive powers by trying to control them. Just give them healthy food options and let them choose. They need to know how to regulate their eating, to know when they are full, to know what they like and don't like.

When I was growing up my father thought if potatoes were not eaten at every single meal I would surely die of potato deprivation. Naturally I hated potatoes and avoided them like the plague until I was middle aged. What about the parent who insists that you always "clean up everything on your plate" or gives you food as a reward for good behavior? Do you think someone might grow up to think they should reward themselves with dessert whenever they were "good?" We set our kids up for unhealthy eating habits or even eating disorders when they are young and we try to control their eating in some way.

The best thing we can do for them is always buy fresh, real, whole food and teach them how to cook it. Model good healthy eating habits ourselves. Make dinner a relaxing time so you can eat slowly and know when you are full. Teach children which foods have the hidden sugars that will eventually make us very sick with diabetes and obesity.

Apr 5, Why Do Surgery?

Sigh. I'm sure gastric bypass surgery has been the right decision for many people who were obese and were stuck in that condition! According to doctors who specialize in this surgery, once you reach a certain BMI (40 or more) it's almost impossible to sustain any significant weight loss. When you are this heavy you most likely have type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. At this level of obesity you may not be able to exercise and it would be very hard if not impossible to get your blood sugar under control without exercise. Type 2 diabetes means that your blood sugar is out of control and metabolic syndrome means that your hormones have been disrupted in the extreme. For such cases, surgery could be the best possible remedy. Although you will still have to change your eating and exercise habits to maintain any successful results.

So it's true, there ARE situations in which gastric bypass surgery is the best solution to obesity. However, when I read the news stories recently that gastric bypass surgery could be the answer for type 2 diabetes I shook my head in disbelief. Suggesting that surgery may be appropriate for a disease that can be reversed with a low glycemic diet and regular exercise is unethical. Shouldn't surgery always be considered the treatment of last resort? All surgeries are risky and they are no guarantee that the good results will be maintained without severely altering one's lifestyle.

What started this dangerous speculation is the publication of two studies in the New England Journal of Medicine that implied that secondarily to having obesity dealt with, patients who had gastric bypass surgery were seeing better outcomes with type 2 diabetes. The truth is these outcomes will not last unless these people, hate to be a broken record here, ultimately change their eating and increase their exercise!

No one should fool themselves that there are ANY quick fixes for type 2 diabetes. It requires discipline, correct and up to date information and resources and commitment to change one's lifestyle. You cannot pretend nutrition is meaningless in a kind of Paula Deen, stick-your-head-in-the-sand kind of way. Destructive behaviors sometimes result in disease.

Surgery is invasive and risky. As Paula Deen learned (after raking in millions of dollars selling people on eating saturated fats and sugar,) sooner or later we pay for our relunctance to face facts.

Life is richer and more interesting when you get away from the inherently toxic affects of sugar. For one thing you won't be fat anymore. Learn more about how to reverse type 2 diabetes in a realistic and sustainable way.

Apr 2, Is Sugar Toxic?

Believe it or not this was the topic of an expose on 60 Minutes last night. At last! Those in the mainstream medical community who ARE informed are speaking out. Dr. Sanje Gupte moderated the interview with Dr. Lustig, a California endocrinologist, who believes that sugar consumption has led to a health crisis of incredible proportions in this country. It is the major driver behind the rise in costs in our health care.

I've been talking about this for many months now. We are in a crisis of scary numbers of people AND children with obesity and an explosion of type 2 diabetes even in kids. Dr. Lustig added that other sugar diseases are hypertension and heart disease. This lifestyle of eating sugar, in soft drinks, sweet foods and other processed and high glycemic foods is "killing us," according to Dr. Lustig.

Gupte wondered if the doctor was being a bit over the top calling sugar a "toxin" but he was assured it is in fact the truth. Wow. It's the concentration of a fruit (cane or corn) sugar that makes it toxic to humans. He went on to say that this epidemic is PREVENTABLE in 75% of the cases! Apparently, he has a lecture on YouTube called "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" to try to get this information out to the masses.

Sugar consumption has actually gone down a bit since the 1970s but the new problem is high fructose corn syrup which I've written about all over my website. It is in almost everything you buy at the super market that is a processed food.

This news is not news to me and I'm sure most of you. Definitely not you if you are a reader of LifetimeFatLoss. This is what inspired me to create my website. My hope is to help all of you prevent sugar diseases. My website is dedicated to helping you change your lifestyle. I want to help you come up with alternatives to this sugar laden diet. There are alternatives that are low glycemic, easy, healthy, and cheap. I will continue to bring you the latest research and support you in your quest to break the sugar habit!

I've been thinking about these cookies for a while and finally revisited this recipe this morning so I could have them for a snack. If you've been a reader of Lifetime Fat Loss for a while you may have tried these. This is a new recipe for me given to me by a friend's daughter that I needed to make more low glycemic. Thank you Rayna!

I wasn't completely satisfied with it because it was a bit crumbly and hard to eat. Now I've added a seed oil to make it stick together and I think it enhances the taste too. So, if you tried this recipe before and weren't happy that the cookie fell apart a little, you may want to try it again!

This is probably the most filling cookie I've ever made and completely guilt free because it is so good for you. It's full of protein, fiber and EFAs and will give you a lot of energy. And yes, it tastes great! It has chocolate chips, right?

One caveat, if you have insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, wait on this one until you have your blood sugar under control. Stock up on all your favorite fresh fruit for now. Everybody else, eat these cookies in the morning or early in the day. Think of these as an energy snack and do your walk, run, gym visit, or whatever you do afterward. Read on for the recipe!

You can buy good low fat sour creams and besides fats aren't the problem remember? Only when you eat them with sugar do you store fat. Chips and veggies are not sweet. And yes you can make low glycemic tortilla chips. That's super easy too. Fats help you to feel full and pampered so you don't feel like pigging out.

Black beans do so many other good things for you too...would you believe give you a hormone lift?

Mar 22, New Tomato Kale Salad - updated kale salad - get skinny with kale!

I'm a sucker for super foods and especially kale because it's a cancer preventive and will help you get skinny because it's just chock full of phytonutrients. But I'll confess I'm not in a love relationship with kale. It's a work in progress.

When my son was young he used to say he would eat anything I put in front of him EXCEPT bok choy and kale! I understood and never forced the issue because kale doesn't exactly invite you in.

First of all it's leaves are thick and sort of foreboding...what to do with it to make you want to eat it without having to chew so much bitterness? We are not inclined as a species to love bitter. It's a learned practice. And bitter needs to be mitigated with other flavors so it's more like a spiciness that adds pluck.

So, it's a personal challenge of mine to find ways to soften kale's ways to make me want to eat it. Why pass up all that nutrition if you can make it not just painless but flavorful? If food is our best medicine, doesn't it make sense to eat the super foods rather than to wait until we get fat or sick? Then we may be forced to eat drugs which seems even crazier.

I'm a food lover and even if medicine has a reputation of tasting awful food is another story altogether. Food as medicine needs to be an all around great experience...better health, skinny body, taste treat!

So... I'm on a kale crusade. If you cut it up super fine you can add it to a salad and it's actually gives the salad some spunk. Then I've found I can put some leaves in my chocolate almond smoothie and I don't even taste it!

And I tweaked my kale recipe which I do really, really like, took a new picture of it and I can truly say now I love this dish. Read about it here.

Mar 21, Thai Green Apple Salad

I am lucky enough to have a daughter- in-law from Thailand who is an artful cook and photographer! She prepares the most delightful, if spicy, Thai meals and some of the recipes are becoming available at Low Glycemic Recipes.

If you are bored with your cooking there is nothing like Thai cooking to liven it up. For some of the ingredients it's helpful if you live in a large enough city to have a Thai or Asian market. But don't despair, I don't and I have found that my natural foods market carries many packaged curries (with no high glycemic ingredients,) fish sauce, and chili paste. Even my super market has Asian fish sauce. Two great brands are Thai Kitchen and Eden Select. You can do a lot with chili paste and fish sauce!

This green apple salad is very spicy but you can definitely cut down on the heat by adding more water to the dressing. You'll have to experiment. Because it IS so spicy it goes best with a meat dish that is on the sweet side or with a more bland rice dish.

If you use whole grain rice and create a dish with lots of vegetables and a little meat or even eggs, it will reduce the glycemic index of the rice. I will soon have two more Thai dishes on Low Glycemic Recipes that will go well with it.

In the meantime, try the green apple salad with your own version of fried rice using just a little peanut oil to saute the cooked rice with eggs and lots of veggies.

Mar 19, Benefits of Flaxseed Oil for Fat Loss and Obesity

My research on flaxseed oil has led me to understand that flaxseed oil can actually be used therapeutically for weight loss and obesity.

The theory behind this is that people who are excessively fat have been eating the wrong foods for a long time. If you are fat and have eaten primarily white foods and starches over time, you may be in a "carbohydrate coma." Sounds drastic and it is! Usually people who eat this way get very little to no exercise because they don't have the energy and their metabolism has slowed significantly.

EFAs are necessary for energy production. If you are not getting omega 3 foods every day then you likely have an essential fatty acid deficiency. It's the EFAs, primarily LNA and LA that burn fat and provide energy production, good immune system function and good digestion. All things that are necessary to lose weight.

Flaxseed oil, which is the richest source of LNA, can then be a good therapy to try along with eating a great many omega 3 foods, flooding your body with fresh vegetables and fruits and eating lean protein and some wholegrains. You don't need to go on a weird diet to try to drop pounds quickly, you need to start eating healthy.

The older you are the more important adding the EFAs is. This is why at the age of 50 it's harder to lose fat. Your body stops making as many hormones which slows metabolism even further and by this time you have an actual deficiency.

Thankfully you can do something about an EFA deficiency. Learn more about the benefits of flaxseed oil and how to add it to your diet to maximize it's effect.

Why would super foods have anything to do with weight loss? These foods to prevent cancer also prevent and fight obesity very effectively! The more of these super foods you can get into your daily life the better. The more you eat them, the less you'll want sugar and white foods and the better you will feel.

There are so many but my top 10 that I eat some of every single day are: flaxseed meal, walnuts, broccoli, cabbage, parsley, beets, garlic, mushrooms, spinach or some dark leafy green, and squash.

How can I eat so many of these? The flaxseed meal and walnuts I eat on cereal or fruit every morning. At least 6 of the veggies I either put in smoothies, eat raw at lunchtime (mostly broccoli) or eat in salads. Beans or green beans I do eat several times a week too in salads, as a side dish or instead of meat.

Flaxseed meal and walnuts burn body fat. Essential fatty acids in seeds, nuts and fish are essential for weight control. Adding the veggies in there means you're not only preventing cancer but you are controlling your blood sugar and preventing a host of other diseases. Find out how.

Stress is a killer. We know that it shuts down our immune systems completely. You are vulnerable to disease if you have chronic stress. Severe stress can even lead to panic attacks.

What I didn't know until recently is that stress can also cause weight gain. It's not fair but it's true that you do not even have to over eat to gain weight if you are stressed! Just the stress leads to the biochemical changes that trigger fat storage and increased blood sugar.

This sets off a cascade of other biochemical processes that produces sugar cravings; hence the desire for sweets when you are stressed. A vicious cycle is set up and stress not only leads to more fat storage it sets you up to eat more sweets.

Here are 9 simple but powerful ways to reduce the stress in your life. Read the whole article to learn what you can do now to turn things around. Print it out and put it on your refrigerator so that you'll be prompted to try something besides eating to alleviate your tension. Take a healthy detour!

What requires at least three new habits, a HUGE attitude shift and some unique and interesting strategies. Would you believe that there is MAGIC in losing fat permanently? Healthy diets and weight loss programs are supposed to be fun because after all we're talking about life here.

Losing fat for a lifetime means you are on a high all the time! There is what I call the magic of your metabolism, the magic of your blood sugar and the magic of your mind. Today is a new day and you can be a new you.

Start your morning out with green tea, cinnamon and a little low glycemic sweetener (agave syrup is good) to spark your metabolism fire. Then make yourself a big fruit smoothie with your favorite fruit, yogurt, flaxseed meal and agave syrup. Where are those walking shoes? Much too early for that for me too. But later this afternoon after you've been sitting at a desk all day you'll see those shoes by your front door...

What makes up a healthy diet and weight loss program? Everyone can eat an elephant one bite at a time. Just make sure the cards are stacked WITH you not against you.

We're not quite there yet but spring is just around the corner. It's time to pore over seed catalogues and think about some new ways to cook the wonderful green vegetables we're seeing in the market.

I love this green bean recipe because it has walnuts and lemon in it. This makes it a perfect low glycemic dish since it combines an omega 3 food with a high fiber vegetable and it tastes great!

Green beans are another vegetable that are super tasty, maybe even taste their best when they're roasted. Roasting seems to bring out the best flavors in all vegetables and it's the same for green beans and even more so. Here's a super simple recipe that will have friends and kids chowing down on them like their French fries - they are that good.
