Vegetable Spaghetti Squash

Visitor Question:

Where does the vegetable spaghetti squash fall on the glycemic index? I love this vegetable, but have recently been diagnosed with diabetes.

Lifetime Fat Loss Answers:

Excellent question. Winter squash have at least a moderately high glycemic index. However, the glycemic load will be quite low because squash is not carbohydrate dense like breads and other starchy foods. Even white potatoes and bananas are more starchy, thus raising your blood sugar more. If you are really disciplined in eliminating sugar, fruit juices, sodas obviously and all white high glycemic foods like the white breads and other processed foods, you may be able to eat the squash you love.

There are some precautions to take. You can have a green salad with a vinaigrette dressing with it which helps to lower the glycemic index. You can also eat it with a protein food like lentils or chicken or walnuts that does the same.

Do you have a blood sugar meter? You can buy a home version
here. It's a good idea to have one of these to make sure you are reducing your blood sugar level. That way you'll know for sure if the spaghetti squash raises your blood sugar.

Because spaghetti squash is so good for you it would be great if you could keep eating it! It has a lot of carotene, a potent antioxidant, and so much fiber. Perhaps by really being careful with the more dangerous sugary foods you can.
